Mr. Edward Vernell Gates died Sunday, November 1, 2009 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was 68.
Born in East St. Louis, IL, he was raised in East Orange and lived in Teaneck before moving to Parsippany in 1977.
Mr. Gates served in the United States Army. Later, he earned his BS in business from Benedict College in South Carolina and his MA in business from Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
Mr. Gates was employed in management with AT&T in Basking Ridge before retiring in 1997. Previously, hea had worked as an accountant for Allied Chemical Co.
He was a member of the Benedict College Alumni Association awhere he had been active in the football program.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John L. Manning.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Judith M. Gates (nee James); his mother, Alice Manning of Parsippany; a daughter, Leslie V. Lynde and her husband Jonathan of Parsippany; and a son, Michael Gates and his wife Laurie of Brooklyn, NY.
